When The Good Days Outnumber The Bad

I think that’s what I’m searching for. I write a lot about what I call the 90-10 rule. Eat well 90 percent of the time, enjoy treats 10 percent of the time, and you’re likely to see success on the scale. I wholeheartedly believe that this is true, especially when combined with regular exercise.

This week, I want to prove that rule and, so far, I’m off to a good start! I went to Body Pump yesterday, will attend spinning tomorrow, and I plan to walk/run both Wed. and Thurs. That’s the workout schedule as of now.

Here’s a look at what I ate today, to get an idea of what I need to shoot for when I’m eating well.

Breakfast:
2 egg muffins
1 English muffin
Points: 7

Snack:
Jello sugar-free pudding cup
Points: 2

Lunch:
Weight Watchers meatloaf, 1/2 serving
Cheetos snack bag (a treat!)
Green beans w/ red bell pepper & almond slices
Peach
Points: 9

Snack:
yogurt w/ raspberries
Points: 2

Dinner:
chicken quesadilla
6 tortilla chips w/ salsa
1 tbsp. sour cream
Points: 12

Snack:
chocolate graham crackers w/ Cool Whip
Points: 7

Total: 39

Right on target! Now, not all these are great food choices. I should’ve eaten more protein and less carbs today, and my dessert is pretty high in points. But, all in all, not a bad day! Eating right at my total points is exactly what I want to strive for. I think if I refrain from using any activity points and I use only some of my extra weekly points, then I’ll see some pounds fall off faster.

How do you try to balance eating well with the occasional treat? Do you like the 90-10 rule?

I am Jennifer Dome, a 33-year-old woman living in Birmingham, Ala., miles from my Northeast-based family and some of my closest friends, but loving the Magic City, my BF and the friends I’ve made here in the South. I’ve lived in nine different states, plus London, and worked for some top-notch publications (Southern Living, Women’s Wear Daily) as a writer and copy editor. Now I am the assistant editor at a bass fishing magazine. I’ve struggled with my weight for as long as I remember, at one time tipping the scale at 289 pounds. At the end of 2009, weighing in at about 275, I started counting calories and exercising regularly, finally finding some success in this ongoing battle. After a scare from my doctor in early 2010, that success became even more important to my overall health. It’s still a challenge, and the scale definitely moves up and down instead of just down, but my confidence that I will reach my goal is solid.
