One of the things I find most challenging about keeping a tidy house is all the stuff that seems to need a place. Mail, jewelry, makeup, medicine, cleaning products, cords … you name it, and it’s probably cluttering up plenty of surfaces in your home, right?
I am still searching for good ways to keep things organized in my home, but I wanted to share a few things I’ve come up with and hopefully you will share your organizing ideas in the comments with me!
We tend to keep mail on the counter and then put it in this wall-hanging sorter we keep in the kitchen. Some items also go straight to our filing system kept upstairs in the still-coming-together office space.
Here’s something similar from Wayfair.com for $38.
2. Handbooks and household receipts
Eventually I think this file box will move to an actual filing cabinet, but for now it keeps all the handbooks for our major appliances, and receipts from major purchases, such as furniture, in one spot so we can find things easily. I got ours at Target for about $14.
I have a pet-peeve with all the cords for our phones, iPads, etc. getting all tangled up and ending up all over the place. This little Rubbermaid Bento box for just $5 was the perfect solution! Now we can keep them rolled up and you don’t have to spend minutes untangling them when you need to use one.
4. Tights, socks, gloves and scarves … and medicine?
I have seven or eight of these canvas bins stored throughout the house to hold lots of different things. In our front closet, his and hers bins for gloves, scarves and hats. In the bathroom, we each have one to hold toiletries, and it’s where I stash my blow dryer, curling iron and flat iron, too. In the closet I have one that holds shapewear and tights, one for socks, and one for, yup, meds. Need a Bandaid or cough syrup? Advil or Benadryl? All in the bin. One day I’ll replace them with one neutral color so they look a little nicer!
I’m sure I’m not the first one who thought of using one of these little plastic drawers to store makeup, but I think it’s so handy! I can pull it out to my bathroom counter and easily look through each drawer. And I used a pretty cup to store brushes so they’re easy to grab and stay fairly clean. Here’s a similar one from Target for $5.
6. Scarves, belts, necklaces
Finally, this is a project that is still underway. Right now I’m storing all of my lightweight scarves, pashminas and belts on hangers. I’m OK with that because I have the space in my closet and I can see them easily when they’re spread out this way. But the hanger of necklaces will go soon. Instead, I plan to hang the hooks you see below on a wall in my closet, and display/store my necklaces on these. It will help keep them from getting tangled and it will just look fun in the closet!
The hook on the left came from an antiques store in Cahaba Heights that I don’t think is open any longer. The hook on the right came from World Market, and they have a ton of fun hooks for as little as $6 each.
So obviously, prettier and tidier storage for my fashion scarves would be nice. How do you store your scarves? And what about some of the other little things, like mail? How do you keep your home from getting cluttered?
