Last night I put on a pair of black knit shorts, a black T-shirt and stood on a scale while waiting for my iPhone camera to go off on the timer … and then I did it again, and again, and again.
Just your average Tuesday night, eh?
Well the torturous photos actually had a purpose — I entered my first DietBet yesterday! A close friend decided to enter one, and since I had never done one before but always been curious, I decided it was a good time to give it a try.
If you’ve never heard of a DietBet, the way it works is someone can host a DietBet and ask others to join in, pitching in the same amount of money. The goal is to lose 4% of your overall weight, and then the pot is divvied up among the participants. The group has a message board, so you can cheer each other on. So far our group leader has also posted other incentives — like a giveaway for hitting 10,000 steps today.
The process to enter is pretty easy, too. You sign up on the website, pay the fee, and then take a photo in basic clothes — hence the black shorts and black T — on a scale. You also have to take a second photo of your weight with a word written on a piece of paper — this word is only assigned to you, so they know you’re legit, and it’s really you in the photo.
It’s pretty simple! I’m not really focused on winning a bunch of money, but I am excited to have another source of accountability.
I’m doing a Periscope session tonight in 10 minutes at 7 p.m. about the different ways that I am trying to keep myself accountable to my fitness and health goals. I hope you will tune in and share your thoughts with me, too!
I will follow-up this post with a look at my other accountability tools, and other suggestions you can try. If you have any suggestions, please let me know in the comments!
