About six years ago, my friend Summer told me about Couch 2 5k. She said she started off walking around the Highlands neighborhood in Birmingham and slowly but surely, she was running, too. Running a little longer, a little farther, each time she laced up her shoes.
Thanks to her, I followed in her footsteps. And thanks to her, I ran 3 miles without stopping to walk for the first time ever and crossed the finish line of the Rumpshaker 5k on March 27, 2010, with the biggest smile on my face.
These days, I’ve been walking more than I run, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But in about three and a half weeks I will do another 5k, and hopefully run most of it, on Saturday, April 2 at 8 a.m.
And I hope you’ll be there to join me!
I hope you’ll look at that day as a challenge — a challenge to walk or run as far as you can, as fast as you can, and complete a goal you’ve never faced before.
Or maybe you’re already an accomplished runner and you haven’t found time lately to give yourself that “me time,” but that morning you will.
Or maybe you’re just starting your fitness journey and you’re only ready for a 1 mile stroll.
Whatever it is, join me. Join us.
Come out to Lakeshore Trail and walk or run — while 3.1 miles is the ultimate goal, come do what you can. We’ll cheer you on and celebrate at the finish.
And this coming Sunday, get some training in with me with a fun and funky form of fitness: the Birmingham Dance Walk! Let’s dance our way around the Magic City and warm up for April 2.
Find that walker within you. Find that runner within you. Embrace her. Embrace him.
I’ll be doing the same!
