10 Things I Want To Do In 2017

I decided that I’m not going to make any resolutions for next year — instead I’m going to look at my goals differently and keep a bucket list of things I want to do before 2017 is over! None of these are work-based goals for my day job; I have those goals, too. But these are more fun things I’ve always wanted to do, or unfinished projects that I finally want to complete, or challenges that I want to have the confidence to tackle.

So here’s my bucket list for 2017!

  1. Take guitar lessons. Several years ago, my grandfather gifted his acoustic guitar to me, and I have yet to learn how to play it. I’ve tinkered around on my own, with some books or online tutorials, but I really want to learn to play for real this year. With my grandfather passing away this past spring, it just feels like time to finally conquer this goal.
  2. Sell more books! I still can’t believe that I fulfilled my goal to self-publish a book in 2016, but I did, and now I need to continue spreading the word about “Fat Girl Power: How I Built Confidence Through Body Positivity, Fashion and Fitness.” Look for me around town, and hopefully elsewhere, pimpin’ my book!
  3. Do regular burpees. If you’ve been a reader of my blog for a while, then you know that I like to try new workouts that challenge me. Right now I am going to Torque classes several times a week, and while I can tell I am getting stronger, there are still moves that requite modifications so I can get through the workout. Next year I want to progress to doing full burpees on the ground, rather than using a box or large tire as I am now.
  4. Learn how to use PhotoShop. I am happy to say that I’m not totally unsavvy when it comes to technology, but PhotoShop has always been a program that eludes me. I want to take some webinars to learn how to use this handy application.
  5. Wear faux fur. I recently told my friend and fellow fashion blogger Christina of Pink Lux that I’ve never worn faux fur, even just a trimmed collar. So before this winter is out, I plan to invest in a cool vest or trimmed jacket and continue my fashion evolution!
  6. Speak with teenage girls about body positivity. While I speak with women my age, or slightly younger or older than me, all the time about body image, I haven’t worked much with teenagers on this subject. I really want to speak to a high school or middle school class or organization on how to love yourself and find confidence.
  7. Finish my cross-stitching project. A year ago (or more!), I started a subversive cross-stitch pattern thanks to a friend who encouraged me to take up the hobby. I love doing it — it’s peaceful and a great stress reliever. But for some reason I put it down a while ago, and haven’t picked it up in months! Gotta get back to it.
  8. Make a fancy dinner! There are certain dishes that I hear the chefs on The Food Network talk about, or I remember from the movie “Julie and Julia,” and I want to learn how to make them! If you have any suggestions for something classic and a little advanced that I should try, let me know!
  9. Travel to Chicago. I finished grad school in Chicago 10 years ago, and I haven’t been back since. Not to mention my bestie lives there now! I would love to get back to the Windy City in 2017.
  10. Freelance an article for a major women’s magazine. I’ve had this goal for a couple of years now, but I’ve actually written a query letter, so at least I’m one step further for 2017! I am hoping to reach out to a women’s magazine to write about body image. Stay tuned for that!
