Fall Fashion For A Cause

Thanks to buddingfashionista, Vanessa, I learned about a great event for a great cause: the fall fashion preview at Saks Birmingham, benefiting The Exceptional Foundation.

The Exceptional Foundation provides recreational and social services for special needs people who are older and now outside of the school system. I was very excited to see participants from the program walk in the fashion show last Thursday!

The clothing was provided by BCBGMAXAZRIA, and in addition to the Exceptional Foundation participants, local fashion bloggers Vanessa and Rachel, from To Hell In A Handbag, also participated.

I loved the leather jacket with the feminine skirt in Rachel’s top look. Vanessa’s gorgeous poppy romper with peplum shape could easily be worn in cooler weather with a cool jacket. The classic white blouses they each wore in their bottom looks are perfect for work.

I myself can’t wait to buy a few new things for fall! I wore a simple black pencil skirt with a vest over a raspberry-colored T, cinched together with my favorite belt from Lane Bryant and statement necklace from Stella & Dot.

I wanted every single item on this display at Saks!

If you are interested in contributing to The Exceptional Foundation, they have several events to attend throughout the year, including the popular Chili Cook-off. Or, simply make a donation!

What fall fashions are you looking forward to wearing? Anyone buying new boots this season?!

Football, Fashion & Food

Last Thursday night I was given the opportunity to attend the Girls of Fall event hosted by Birmingham Magazine at the Wynfrey hotel. As a Penn State and Northwestern alum, and fan of football in general (Go Patriots!), I was excited to attend and hopefully learn a thing or two. Thankfully, I had a better time than expected — in fact, I can’t wait for this event to roll around next year … and I think you should mark it on your calendar, too!

I attended the event with my coworker and friend Tyler, who is an Alabama fan. Before we started our first of three workshops, we enjoyed some yummy food and checked out some of the merchandise on sale. I really loved this Slater Zorn vest at the GridIronGirl.org booth, and this awesome neon necklace by Urbane.

Three07, one of the boutiques in the fashion show later that night, had a booth with fun clothes for Auburn and Alabama fans, and we learned about GridIronGirl.org, a website about football for women. Definitely check it out!

Then we started our workshops, which included tailgating tips from Josh Bailey at Dreamland BBQ, inside info about officiating games from SEC referee David Smith and Xs and Os with Phil Savage Jr., which helped us understand the positions on the field and how the defense mirrors the offense.

And finally, my favorite part of the evening, the fashion show! The clothes we saw were so much fun and so stylish. We saw great looks from Mint Julep, Three07 and Slater Zorn.

I loved the whole concept of Girls of Fall, and now I can’t wait for football season to start!

What’s your favorite part of football season? The food? The clothes! The game itself?

What I Want Now: Keepin’ Warm

It’s raining outside, and it seems like it hasn’t stopped all. Day. Long. Tonight the temperature is supposed to drop and they’re calling for ice and possibly even snow. Needless to say, all I can think about is curling up with a thick blanket and keeping warm.

Here’s what I want to wear, head to toe, to keep toasty this winter.

After attending a couple fishing tournaments for work in mid-February, I’ve learned that you’ll never be warmer than when your head is covered. So why not look cute at the same time?

I need a basic black-and-white scarf, and I’ve always wanted one of these eternity scarves, too. This one has some added glitz with the shimmery thread.

Apparently I’m going with a black-and-white theme here, though I didn’t mean to! I love this print, and I can never have enough cardigans!

Fleece-lined leggings?!! Yes, please!

Boot socks are essential at this time of year. Confession: I often wear knee-high, thick socks under pants even when not wearing boots.

What do you like to wear to stay cozy during winter?

Flat Footed

So it’s Day 2 of #bloglikecrazy and I’m getting today’s post in under the wire tonight. Why? Well, I’ve been chillin’ all day after running the Vulcan 10k this morning — a great 6 miles, however, I did suffer from some pain in my feet, as well as shin splints, so it could’ve been better.

I’m not really in the frame of mind to give you a full recap of the race tonight, so instead, let’s focus on something that’s been on my mind all day: my feet. But instead of talking about plantar fasciitis, let’s talk about something a lot more fun: shoes!

Shoes are one of my favorite accessories, partly because, as Toni Collette says in one of my favorite movie quotes ever (from In Her Shoes): “Clothes never look any good … food just makes me fatter … shoes always fit.”

Lately, I’ve had to only look longingly at the high heels in my closet because my feet are a little too sensitive to walk around in them all day. So I’ve been focusing on cute flats. Sadly, I only have two viable pairs of flats right now because a couple pairs hurt my feet and a couple pairs are broken. Needless to say, I’m looking to add to my collection!

Here are a few great pairs I’ve had my eye on.

These have a lot going for them — they’re burgundy, a hot color again this season; they have a pointy toe, also very “in” right now; and the ankle strap makes them even more feminine, which I love.

There’s no doubt I have a serious love affair with the shoes at Target, so forgive me if this post is full of them. I also have a serious love affair with loafers, and this dark grey pair is definitely going to find a place in my closet very, very soon.

What can I even say about these?! Leopard. Gold chain detail. Patent-leather toe. All wrapped up in one pretty little ballet flat. Love!

These are just so beautiful and deserve a swingy, full skirt and a night out on the town. Think you always need to wear heels when out on a date? Not with these pretties in your closet!

Patterned shoes are not that hard to wear, especially when they’re a fun black-and-white print like these. Mix them with other patterns — polka dots or stripes maybe? — or jazz up an otherwise ho-hum outfit.

I know, I know. You’re thinking, “Camouflage? Really, Jen?” Well, since it’s one of the hottest trends of the season, yes. With studs on the back. Double yes. Trust me. They’ll make a statement. And it won’t be G.I. Jane.

Of course, I had to end the post with a purple pair! I’m so in love with these and I know they’ll complement a lot of clothes in my closet — I bet they’ll complement a lot of your outfits, too!

Where do you find cute flat shoes? Do you refresh your “shoe wardrobe” with a new pair or two each season?

Fashion Friday: Layering

Fall is by far my favorite time of year. And no, it’s not because I can get all the pumpkin bread, muffins and donuts that I want (I shouldn’t be eating that stuff anyway!). One reason is: tights. Or leggings. I just love the return of covering up my legs while still wearing dresses for two reasons: 1) I don’t have to shave my legs as often (gross, but true), and 2) I can use the tights or leggings as shapewear. Bye, bye ugly stomach-sucking in panties!

Yesterday I wore this outfit to work, and as I was getting dressed I thought, “This is the beginning. Blazer over dress, and soon … leggings!” I may have danced giddily around my bedroom. I just love to layer.

Here’s some inspiration for layering this fall. Whether it’s a coat, blazer or cardigan; tights or leggings; heels, boots or booties, pile it on! It’s all about layering.

This coat could be outerwear, or it could just be worn as a blazer. I love the design and the leather touches. And kudos to the leggings paired with booties.

I love the pattern on SJP’s jacket, and I feel like this outfit could easily take you from summer to fall, with the color palette and ankle-length skinnies.

photo 2

Loving this neutral-colored blazer, which could be paired with all kinds of colorful skinny pants. Cameron always rocks the classic, laid-back look.

photo 3

What’s different about this look is she’s wearing a silky blouse instead of a T-shirt, and I love that navy is the main color, instead of black.

photo 5

Alexa Chung. You can’t go wrong with getting style inspiration from her! I like how the pattern of the scarf plays off the pattern of the dress here. And I love her tights. Love!

A cardigan with elbow patches. Need I say more?

photo 2

A dress with a defined waist (see belt) and a knit blazer with rolled up sleeves? Seems familiar, huh?

photo 3

This girl just exudes fall cool. She took dressy shorts into the next season by adding tights and lace-up boots (love lace-up boots!). The scarf and bag also add a “fall is here” feeling.

photo 4

This outfit is just too classic. Little black dress. Little jean jacket. Amazing accessories. Done.

These casual military-inspired jackets are the perfect thing to throw on on the weekend. Love how she’s wearing her boots and jeans, too.

The perfect office look! Blouse + cardigan + dress pants = easy work wear. But love how this is jazzed up with color, polka dots and that bow. That bow!

What are you excited to layer this fall? How do you feel about tights/leggings/booties?
